A neon performance shoot shot by Yannick Soyez
In this performance I am holding a white neon with the word lateral and this neon came from a big black drawing with white neons and white oil stick text that I made at my last studio residency at the Big Ci. For this performance I just chose the word lateral that alludes to the concept of lateral thinking coined by the intellectual Edward De Bono.
“Lateral thinking is concerned not with playing with the existing pieces but with seeking to change those very pieces. It is concerned with the perception of thinking.”
Edward De Bono
Lateral is very different from vertical thinking.
I think the Dalai Lama has some ideas like the concept of lateral thinking where he talks about looking at situations from as many perspectives as possible.
“It takes a calm mind to be able to consider things from different angles and points of view.”
Dalai Lama
I think I have two quotes by men on thinking outside the box so now I shall have two female quotes that are concerned with this idea.
“Don’t be intimidated by what you don’t know. That can be your greatest strength and ensure you do things differently from everyone else.”
Sarah Blakely
I love this quote by Blakely and I feel that I aim to wake up every day with a fresh start as if I know nothing.
“There is no innovation and creativity without failure.”
Brene Brown
I love this quote about there being no innovation without failure and feel in my own life that I have learnt most from my failures, particularly with my drawing.
In conclusion I feel the word lateral is very numinous and suggestive of ways to think outside the box.
