“Lateral thinking is concerned not with playing with the existing pieces but with seeking to change those very pieces. It is concerned with the perception part of thinking. This is where we organise the external world into the pieces we can then ‘process’.”
Edward de Bono
Today Yannick did a photo and video shoot with me holding a new neon in white with the text lateral thinking in my apartment. I think lateral thinking is the most important strategy for me making sense of the world and my place in it in my art and writing but most particularly in my ten drawings a day project. The term was coined by the intellectual Edward De Bono and I am yet to read his book titled: The Six Thinking Caps.
Most importantly lateral thinking helps me make peace in my mind and in my body. I feel recently the other time that lateral thinking helps me is when my mind wanders while swimming my morning laps at the pool. Today it was 54 laps of a 25m pool or around 3 hours.
Swimming relaxes me both physically and mentally but I also get very tired.
“Being able to ‘think out of the box’ presupposes you were able to think in it.”
Bob Lutz
I like this quote about the importance of being able to think inside and outside the box and it inspires my box sculptures literally.
