Sometimes I feel I am a scaredy cat but when I think I could go back in time and be Saint Francis cat I feel safe and happy

An Exhibition at Kirra Hill Community Centre

Luke Foster and install and documentation by Yannick Soyez

“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”

Francis of Assisi

This art work is an installation where different mediums within a room come together so everything in the room becomes the artwork.

In this case: sculpture, performance/ video documentation and photographic documentation and drawings. This is a very simplistic explanation of what installation art is.

There has been a radical shift in my art away from ever making political commentary to a quest for solace in spiritualism through the mediums of art and essays. I realised that I am too sensitive to get involved in the realm of politics but need a strong spiritual backbone to live peacefully in the world. To find this equilibrium I need to study the teachings of the saints every morning through watercolour and pen drawings with quotes and analysis of these parables and lessons.

A strong female saint is the Australian Mary MacKillop.

“Remember we are but travellers here”

Mary MacKillop

For a future project later in the year I want to write a book about spiritualism in art both historically and in contemporary art and also in my own art to couch it in an art historical context in the format of essays. I’ve started the research already with a quite lengthy for me essay on the topic. This is the last exhibition for another year after a whirlwind of intense creativity over the past four years and I shall focus on my health and renovating my apartment instead.

The Saints/ I wish I could go back in time to meet them as their loved cat

“Never see a need without doing something about it”

Mary MacKillop

I decided to make this zine not as an artwork (a zine of drawings with text: quotes by the saints) but rather as a tool to study the teachings of the Catholic saints in equal number of female and male saints. The reason I do this is I feel for there to be harmony in my mind then I need to learn more and more every day with my study of the saints and build a strong spiritual backbone. The only saints I know well when I wrote this at the start of drawing and writing are Mary MacKillop and Saint Francis from Italy.

Trying to be Zen Not Flustered

Exhibition by Luke Foster

“Zen is not some kind of excitement, but concentration on our usual everyday routine.”– Shunryu Suzuki

Kirra Hill Community Centre Art Gallery

12th August – 26th August

1 Garrick St, Coolangatta QLD 4225

This coming exhibition is a mix of different mediums. It’s a week out so I am still wondering what I shall put in the show but I am thinking at this stage five big framed a0 photos, six large drawing collages, a performance video projected, two trestle tables and two fruit and veggie box installations with drawings in each box and two neon signs above them one saying chthonian in red and one saying compassion in blue.

I usually study and write essays about Tibetan Buddhism and Christian saints but this time at the back of my mind is Zen Buddhism hence the title Trying to be Zen not flustered.

“The way to study the Buddha’s teachings is to study ourselves. To study ourselves is to forget ourselves.”

Dogen Zenji

Mothers Love Book launch at Tweed Library
on the 22nd of July at 10am.

It was published by Austin MaCauley last month.

Mother’s Love is a series of essays about social issues. I say that my readers know my essays are good for them like broccoli, but the jokes throughout are sort of the cream cheese that makes the essays tasty. I started writing them in 2014 and then picked up where I left off in 2021. Some of the best essays were written while travelling to Brooklyn in New York in 2021. The other more notable essays were written after long beach walks where I would empty my mind out so when I started writing I would only have a heading in mind and then let the rest flow directly out of my subconscious. I often say that my life is sort of a circus that my essays are based on but the Dalai Lama says circuses are fun.

To book in, please call Tweed Heads library on (07)5536 3672.
