Trying to be Zen Not Flustered

Exhibition by Luke Foster

“Zen is not some kind of excitement, but concentration on our usual everyday routine.”– Shunryu Suzuki

This exhibition documentation particularly the walk around video explains the show so I won’t write much about it. The most important element is the video of me on the beach with the ocean behind me and I’m wearing a cheap elephant mask and holding a fruit box with the text in it World Peace painted in a rough black ink and brush. There is a tenuous link between saving the endangered elephants and world peace. Without the environment intact we can’t have world peace as well.

I usually study and write essays about Tibetan Buddhism and Christian saints but this time at the back of my mind is Zen Buddhism hence the title Trying to be Zen not Flustered.

“The way to study the Buddha’s teachings is to study ourselves. To study ourselves is to forget ourselves.”
