Competing to be the World’s Greatest Grandmother/ A Mixed Media Art Installation by Luke Foster

DATES: 13 Feb 2025 to 24 Feb 2025: 9-4pm Weekdays

LOCATION: Kirra Hill Community Centre: 1 Garrick St, Coolangatta QLD 4225

This exhibition involves drawings in fruit and vegetable boxes, several projected videos that are documentation of beach performances, a video sculpture that I am remaking from art school days, two other sculptures, two large drawings and a large A0 framed drawing.

For me the most interesting aspects are the two sculptures that feature lots of converse high top shoes in two Temu carts the Chinese brand and the shoes are Converse which is one of Americas most iconic brands. I also like the text on Converse: All-Star as I feel no person is an island and everyone is part of a community.  I put them together as I feel that trade between China and America can make peace in the world. Also trade between all other nations can have the same effect too. They also have two neon’s one on each one saying kindness in blue and the other happiness in white. These are key words not only in all Buddhist philosophy’s but two of the most used words by the Dalai Lama in his talks and books.

I think two of my favourite role models are the Dalai Lama and Pope Francis. These are some quotes by them that speak to me and influence the drawings and text in the small and large drawings of the show in particular.

Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions”.

Dalai Lama

I love this quote by the Dalai Lama and it speaks to me as I find some days I have to look at the silver lining in every situation so I can be happy.

“Grace is not part of consciousness; it is the amount of light in our souls, not knowledge nor reason.”

 Pope Francis

In conclusion I always try to keep a sense of humour in my art despite the fact that my work addresses serious issues and I find humour helps me look at these issues with compassion.

This is the video inside the ocean room sculpture I am remaking for the show.
