“I go to Paris, I go to London, I go to Rome, and I always say, “There’s no place like New York. It’s the most exciting city in the world now. That’s the way it is. That’s it.”
– Robert De Niro
I have been to New York twice and shall soon be coming for my third visit. I think my favourite thing is going to all the big art museums and checking out all the amazing art. You can’t beat seeing an original Basquiat or Warhol or Jasper Johns or Beuys. The big museums include the Whitney, the Guggenheim, MOMA and MOMA ps1.
Usually when I travel, I put on some weight as I don’t eat as healthy and do less exercise. I usually do about two hours exercise a day walking on the beach in Australia. So, this time I hope to catch the subway to central park each morning and walk around for a few hours.
I have a few ideas about art projects I want to work on in New York but I shall keep them under my hat until I get there as I often change my mind about plans for art projects.
I hope to write essays most days and get Ross to post them on my website.
Last time I was in New York at the end of 2021 I wrote about half of my Mother’s Love essays book.
“Practically everybody in New York has half a mind to write a book, and does.”
– Groucho Marx
This shall be my first international art residency and I hope to do one once a year for a month in a different country each time for the rest of my life. I am already booked in to do another one in Fukuoka Japan in March 2025.
