I Feel Sad

Essay by Luke Foster

“Home was never a dream for homeless people as they used to have their homes. Living in a home was their reality. Now we need to help them to find the lost reality – again.” – Munia Khan

I caught a train from Casino to Sydney overnight with my friend Birdie and only got a few hours sleep and then when we got to Sydney, I went straight to under Town Hall steps where this homeless man lived for quite a while. I had a bag of winter clothes ready for him but when I went there, he was gone. I felt sad thinking the worst and then felt stupid as I never had asked his name in the past and then I thought about it today on the way to Manly on the ferry and thought perhaps he had finally moved into a home and off the street.

So now I have this bag of warm clothes and don’t know what to do with them. Perhaps once I have had a good meal and a good night’s rest then I shall know what to do.

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” Helen Keller

I won’t lie as I do suffer quite a bit and at other times feel happy and content.

“When we meet real tragedy in life, we can react in two ways – either by losing hope and falling into self-destructive habits, or by using the challenge to find our inner strength.” Dalai Lama
