Essay by Luke Foster
“Love one another, bear with one another, and let charity guide you all your life.”
Mary MacKillop
I think my main mistake in life was having poor role models and I didn’t realise why I kept making stupid mistakes when I was immature. As you have to choose your role models carefully as if you look up to someone with poor judgement then you yourself think it’s cool to have poor judgement.
However, in the past few days I realise now that I have an excellent judge of character and it makes me very happy when I smile at someone or a family and they smile back or stop for a little chat. However, what I struggle with most is when I forget people’s names as when I had teachers in school, I felt sad if a favourite teacher didn’t remember my name.
That’s why perhaps I made the Pope and Dalai Lama sad for a second as I only remember their spiritual titles. I have been writing and drawing together to try to remember their names.
They are Pope Jorge Mario Berguglio and Dalai Lama Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatsu. Gee I hope I spelled their names properly.
“Life is a journey. When we stop, things don’t go right.”
Pope Francis
Due to the previous Popes funeral my planned visit to Vatican City was cancelled last year and on leaving for Greece at Rome Airport mum had passed that day and can’t remember if my brother called or texted me but he passed on the news about mums passing. I was very physically sick mentally and physically for a few minutes and ran to the toilet to throw up then I was still very scared and sad but I think I felt safe as I was very close literally and metaphorically to the Pope.
“Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.”
Dalai Lama
However as much as I love the Pope and His Holiness Dalai Lama I feel my best role model was my loving mum Maria Foster and we kind of competed metaphorically to be the best grandmother in our community. It was only when I was away from her that I chose people who were lost as friends and role models but most immature people do.
“Stop drawing yourself and use colour.”
Maria Foster
“Stop living beyond your means and money is nothing to you.”
Maria Foster
In conclusion my only advice for the younger generation is to choose your role models carefully as that’s how you become and if you choose them carefully then you shall be a great success and have a happy life.
