Essay by Luke Foster
“Failure at some point in your life is inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable.”
Joe Biden
I don’t watch the news or read the newspapers but I feel Joe Biden is a good choice as a returning president as I like his policies on healthcare and gun control. However, for more of a balance of power I hope that secretary of state would be a strong woman like Michelle Obama.
“You have to stay in school. You have to. You have to go to college. You have to get your degree. Because that’s the one thing people can’t take away from you is your education. And it is worth the investment.”
Michelle Obama
I agree with Michelle about the importance of education but I wish college for people was on a loan system in the United States so all who have good grades can get a university education not just the very wealthy. In Australia you get a loan system called HECS and when you make enough money you pay it back in tax.
However, I have three university courses under my belt but felt like a loser as I have only had low paid part time menial jobs my whole life except as an English teacher and preparator at the MCA. I have been a relatively poor artist my whole life collecting social security cheques and living on the smell of an oil rag so I could publish a book and make my art and travel abroad once a year drawing for a month. However, in February this year I did a studio residency at Mothership in Brooklyn New York and was so exhausted I was sleeping until three in the afternoon. However, I did lots of drawing and gave those all away in installations I made for world leaders and international galleries since I got back and all pro bono which means working for free.
I however I feel I’ve got international and national travel out of my system as I realised how much danger I have been in sometimes falling in with the wrong crowd while travelling. I want to live a long happy life so I don’t even like riding a bicycle to the grocery store.
However, due to the diligence and love of my mum who set me up for life I have a lovely small apartment by the beach and enough money to supplement my pension for life hopefully if I am frugal. Mum taught me never to trust anyone when it comes to money and never count your chickens before they hatch.
“In some parts of the world, students are going to school every day. It’s their normal life. But in other part of the world, we are starving for education… it’s like a precious gift. It’s like a diamond.”
Malala Yousafzai
I think Malala is an amazing role model for women everywhere with her bravery in speaking out for women’s rights. And one day I would love there to be a female president in America. There has, been ones in Australia and New Zealand with Julia Gillard in Australia and Jacinda Ardern in New Zealand.
“Our future growth relies on competitiveness and innovation, skills and productivity… and these in turn rely on the education of our people.”
Julia Gillard
I think Julia and Bob Hawke and Kevin Rudd were my favourite Australian prime ministers.
“I am not the first woman to multi-task. I am not the first woman to work and have a baby – there are many women who have done this before.”
Jacinda Ardern
In conclusion I feel the key to a safe and prosperous America not just for the rich is the best way out of the jungle for all Americans rich and poor is to vote for Joe Biden.
