Ten Things We Can Do to Save the Environment and Ourselves in the Process/ We Are the Kids from America

Essay by Luke Foster

It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.”

Sir David Attenborough

I agree with David and each morning I beach walk for two hours and enjoy the beach and ocean view. I think my residencies at the Blue Mountains Big Ci at the edge of the Wollemi National Park are so inspiring for my art lead by Rae and Yuri Bolotin. I think I have done six residencies there now over the years.

[Verse 1]
Looking out a dirty old window
Down below the cars in the city go rushing by
I sit here alone, and I wonder why
Friday night, and everyone’s moving
I can feel the heat, but it’s soothing, heading down
I search for the beat in this dirty town
[Pre-Chorus 1]
Downtown the young ones are going
Downtown the young ones are growing
[Chorus]
We’re the kids in America (Woah)
We’re the kids in America (Woah)
Everybody live for the music-go-round

The Kids in America by Kim Wilde

I love this song and have been listening to it a lot and dancing to it sometimes and it makes me literally think about all my friends in America.

The Following are ten things we can do to save the environment and ourselves in the process.

  • Stopping deforestation of old growth forests.

“Worldwide, we have now destroyed over half of the forest that once flourished on our planet. Not only are we losing the animals that once lived on them, we’re also changing the climate of the entire globe.”

– David Attenborough, renowned British naturalist and broadcaster.

  • Overcoming air and ocean pollution.

“Plastic pollution is a global issue: killing wildlife, contaminating our oceans and waters, and lasting far longer than it is used.”

        – Leonardo DiCaprio, actor and environmental activist.

  • Reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

“Climate change is a huge challenge, but it can be brought in line if governments, businesses and individuals work together.” “We are running the most dangerous experiment in history right now, which is to see how much carbon dioxide the atmosphere can handle before there is an environmental catastrophe.”

  •  More environmental, friendly energy supplies such as solar energy and wind power.

“To truly transform our economy, protect our security, and save our planet from the ravages of climate change, we need to ultimately make clean, renewable energy the profitable kind of energy.”

  • Using walking, bicycle riding and public transport over driving cars to much. But if you ride a bicycle, make, sure you wear a helmet and ride safe.

“Transportation is responsible for half of our state’s air pollution, and many suffer as a result. Children are more likely to develop respiratory illnesses and struggle in school when they breathe smoggy air.”

 Alex Padilla

  • Reducing the extinction of plants and animals via stopping fishing and hunting of animals in Africa particularly elephants and making more land and ocean parks.

Each year sees the disappearance of thousands of plant and animal species that we will never know — that our children will never see — because they have been lost forever. The great majority become extinct for reasons related to human activity… We have no such right.”

  • Better land management to reduce bush fires particularly in Australia which destroy animal and plant habitat and human’s homes and lives.
  • Saving humpback whales from extinction. I am so happy to see whales everyday while beach walking but I am not sure if they are humpback whales.
  • Promoting healthy eating and lifestyle choices for longer life expectancy of humans we are animals too and not separate from nature.

“A healthy diet is essential for good health and nutrition. It protects you against many chronic noncommunicable diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Eating a variety of foods and consuming less salt, sugars and saturated and industrially-produced trans-fats, are essential for healthy diet.”

  • Creating more national parks globally particularly in Africa to save the species and plants there.

In conclusion if we save the natural environment and all its plants and animals then we put ourselves as humanity in a better position to save ourselves and have a world to live in for future generations. In conclusion I want to include this quote on the environment by the Dalai Lama.

“But we will not survive if we continue to go against nature. We have to accept this. If we unbalance nature, humankind will suffer. Furthermore, as people alive today, we must consider future generations: a clean environment is a human right like any other.”
